Covering Underserved Communities with Care and Accuracy

Regardless of what beat a journalist is writing for, gun violence or incidents of gun violence will
inevitably come up. Misrepresentation of these communities can be alienating, even re-
traumatizing as co-victims to such devastating violence. It is important to know how to approach
the story with thoughtful consideration, to not cause more harm to impacted communities.

The Association of Gun Violence Reporters, in partnership with Black Alder Labs, is holding a
webinar event for open dialogue between journalists of color. The event will focus on how
reporters can cover stories of gun violence with sensitivity to context, to protect those impacted
by these traumatic events.

Inspired by a recent report by Black Alder Labs, discussion will
include the cost of such storytelling and how it can be remedied through shared experiences and
practical coping strategies.

Join us for a panel discussion on trauma-informed practices in reporting and prioritizing the
safety of communities.

Anyone working in gun violence reporting is welcome to join. You can register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/covering-underserved-communities-with-care-and-accuracy-tickets-1778595951369?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=1
